7 Reasons Why Tankini Bottoms Are a Great Swim Choice
Let me be real for a second — swimsuit shopping? Not exactly my favorite thing to do. Half the time, I'd try on a bottom and wonder who they were made for—too low, too tight, too much showing.
I tried a pair of tankini bottoms a few years ago to switch it up, and I haven't looked back since.
Here's why I keep reaching for them, year after year.
1. They Don't Ride Up or Fall Down
I know that sounds basic, but you'd be surprised how hard it is to find a swimsuit that... stays put.
Tankini bottoms have that extra bit of coverage and hold. I don't spend the whole day tugging them into place. I can swim, sit, stand — whatever — and they behave. That's rare.
2. I Can Wear Them With Almost Any Top
Got a cute floral tankini top? Great. Want to wear that solid black top from last season? Still works.
That's what I like about these bottoms — they're not fussy. I've mixed and matched mine with probably five different tops. They're kind of like jeans: easy to pair with anything.
Tip: Black or navy tankini bottoms are the easiest to pair with other colors.
3. They Cover My Butt
Sorry, but someone had to say it.
Some bikini bottoms these days barely exist. I don't want half my cheeks at the lake with my family. Tankini bottoms give decent coverage without looking like diaper shorts. It's a win.
4. The High-Waisted Ones Are My Favorite
I had my second kid two years ago, and my stomach's not what it used to be. I'm okay with that, but still want to feel supported in a swimsuit.
High-waisted tankini bottoms smooth things out and don't feel like they're squeezing the life out of me. I can breathe, move, eat chips — all the essential beach things.
5. They're Not Just for One Body Type
I've seen women of all shapes wear them — older women, new moms, athletic builds, curvy bodies, everything in between.
And they look good.
It could be because they hit at a more flattering spot on the hip. Or it's because they aren't trying too hard. Either way, they work for more than just one group of people.
6. They Last Longer Than My Other Swimsuits
I've had some of my tankini bottoms for years. Rinse, dry, wear again. They hold their shape. They don't fade like some of the brighter pieces I own.
I usually hang them up to air dry instead of tossing them in the dryer — makes a big difference.
Note: If you often swim in a chlorinated pool, rinse them when you're done. Keeps the fabric from breaking down.
7. I Feel Better In Them
This is the most important one.
I don't think about my swimsuit once I put these on. No fixing, no covering up, no wishing I'd worn something else. I wear them and enjoy myself.
It's not about hiding but feeling good in what you're wearing. That's all.
A Few Quick Answers If You're Curious:
Q: Do they help with tummy control?
Some do. Look for ones with a thicker waistband or ruching — those usually help.
Q: Can I wear them with non-tankini tops?
Yep. I've worn mine with a bandeau, a crop rash guard, and a long-line bikini top. They're flexible like that.
Q: Are they only for modest swimwear?
Not at all. Some styles are sporty, some are trendy. It's not about covering up everything — it's about comfort.
Final Thought
I don't love shopping for swimsuits. But when I find something that fits, stays put, and doesn't make me feel awkward, I hold on to it.
That's what tankini bottoms have been for me. They're simple, they fit right, and they just work. No drama.
